Liam is also counting down the days until Christmas with his very own advent calendar. His Nana made it for him and has stuffed each little baggy with candy, little toys, or art materials. Obviously, Liam looks forward to opening a little bag every morning over breakfast. I mean, what kid wouldn't?
Today we opened up the Gingerbread house kit that Aunt Bar made for Liam. Right after breakfast this morning I assembled the walls and roof, while Liam frustrated the crap out of me helped. Once the icing dried enough so that the house wouldn't implode at the slightest breeze, (seriously, my construction skills are extraordinarily poor for being an architect's daughter), we unpacked all of the decorations. I decided I would let Liam have full artistic license over the project - which was a very difficult exercise in letting go of control. In my mind every decoration had a rightful place on the house. But, Liam's ideas were quite different than mine. He laid the snowmen down in the yard and placed most of the presents on the roof. And he wasn't following my first rule of design: less is more. However, he was very deliberate about piling the decorations around the house where he wanted them. Once I gave up control, it was fun to watch him work. When it was all said and done, he had used almost all of the decorations in the kit. And now we have a beautiful center piece that I have to remind him every three seconds not to eat.
